Halogen Bonding Based “Catch and Release”: Reversible Solid State Entrapment of Elemental Iodine with Mono-Alkylated DABCO Salts

The halogen bonding (XB) between elemental iodine (I2) and neutral 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) and its monoalkylated PF6– salts was studied by X-ray crystallographic, thermoanalytical, and computational methods. DABCO was found to form both 1:1 and 1:2 complexes with I2 showing an exceptionally strong halogen bond (ΔEcp = −73.0 kJ/mol) with extremely short N···I distance (2.37 A) in the 1:1 complex (1a). In the more favored 1:2 complex (1b), the XB interaction was found to be slightly weaker [ΔEcp = −64.4 kJ/mol and d(N···I) = 2.42 A] as compared to 1a. Chlorine loss from polyvinylchloride under neutron irradiation

PVC samples were irradiated for 1 hour with a thermal neutron flux of Φ th =4.71·1011n·cm−2·s−1 and the chlorine lost during irradiation was measured by γ-ray spectrometry. About 15% of loss of chlorine has been observed for untreated samples while samples heated to temperatures of 60 and 80°C for one minute before irradiation have been found to loose about 8% and 3%, respectively. The results indicate an influence of the polymer structure on the release of chlorine.

Effect of Heating Time and Temperature on the Chemical Characteristics of Biochar from Poultry Manure

Poultry manure (PM) chars were obtained at different temperatures and charring times. Chemical-physical characterization of the different PM chars was conducted by cross-polarization magic angle spinning (CPMAS) (13)C NMR spectroscopy and thermal analysis. CPMAS (13)C NMR spectra showed that the chemical composition of PM char is dependent on production temperature rather than on production duration. Synthesis and characterisation of polymeric manganese and zinc 5-hydroxyisophthalates

Abstract The crystallisation of 5-hydroxyisophthalic acid with divalent Mn or with Mn or Zn and either 2,2-bipyridine (2,2-bipy) or pyridine-2-(1H-pyrazol-3-yl) gave solids of composition [Mn(C8H4O5)(H2O)3]·2H2O (1), [Mn(C8H4O5)(2,2′-bipy)]·H2O (2), [Mn2(C8H4O5)2(C8H7N3)2]·H2O (3) and [Zn(C8H4O5)(2,2′-bipy)] (4). Each compound has 1D co-ordinative chains that are connected by hydrogen bonds. Compounds 2–4 contain M2C2O4 rings with pseudo-chair geometries. The Mn atoms in 2 are coupled antiferromagnetically.

Three novel cyanide-bridged heterobimetallic coordination polymers have been synthesized by hydrothermal routes, in superheated water solutions, by using K3[Co(CN)6], NiCl2.6H2O, and alpha-diimine ligands: [Ni(CN)4Co(phen)] (1; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline), [Ni(CN)4Co(2,2'-bipy)] (2; 2,2'-bipy = 2,2'-bipyiridine), and [Ni(CN)4Co(2,2'-bipy)2] (3). Bio-based rigid high-density polyurethane foams as a structural thermal break material

Abstract Sustainable development of building industry implies increasing usage of green materials. With this aim and for the intended application as a structural thermal break material, rigid high-density polyurethane foams have been manufactured using polyols derived from renewable resources - tall oil fatty acids. Thermal conductivity, compressive strength and stiffness of the foams of density ranging from ca. 100 to 680 kg/m3 have been determined. This paper describes the preparation of monodisperse colloids from various methacrylates. These colloids sediment well on glass slides and formin the dried statelarge three-dimensional face-centered cubic photonic crystal films with Bragg reflection in the visible region. Depending on crystallization conditions, the domain sizes vary between 50 and 300 μm. By cross-linking the polymer within the colloids, it is possible to increase the thermal stability of the polymeric photonic structure tremendously (up to 1 h at 200 °C).
